A plant population calculator determines the number of plants per acre in any row crop based on a simple field sample. By counting plants in a known area (typically 1/1000 acre of row) and converting to acres, you can quickly assess stand establishment for corn, soybeans, cotton, sorghum, or any other row crop. Plant population is one of the most important crop metrics — it directly affects yield potential, identifies planter performance issues, and helps evaluate crop health. Modern corn hybrids need 32,000-35,000 plants per acre; soybeans need 100,000-140,000; cotton needs 30,000-50,000. This calculator works for all crops.
Formula & Method
Plants per acre = (Plants counted ÷ Row length ft × Row spacing ft) × 43,560. For 30-inch rows, count plants in 17'5" (1/1000 acre) and multiply by 1,000. For 15-inch rows, count in 34'10". For 36-inch rows, count in 14'6". Take 5+ samples per field for accuracy.
